Research

Research projects in my laboratory are directed toward elucidating the roles and regulation of the arginases in diseases such as asthma, sickle cell disease, hypertension, atherosclerosis, and renal fibrosis. As part of studies to determine the mechanism of action of the arginases in these diseases, we are evaluating the impact of arginase expression on synthesis of nitric oxide (NO), polyamines, and proline. We also are investigating the signal transduction pathways, DNA elements and transcription factors involved in regulating expression of the arginase genes in response to cytokines and other agents that play key roles in the disease processes. Our long-term goal is to identify new targets for therapeutic intervention in disease.
